Colors & sizes vary.
This is Leslye's pot. |
Instead of painting benches to be auctioned off at the Blacksburg Spring festival* this year, we will have extra-large terra cotta flower pots to paint. These must be painted with a garden theme. If you would like to paint one and can have it completed by April 7th, please contact Maxine Lyons and she will reserve you a pot.
The pots are about about 20" (see enlargement) and weigh 35lbs. The are fairly heavy but one person of average health can lift them and they will fit in the seat of a car.

2005 DC Bus Trip
Sponsors: Studio School, BRAA
August 25, 2005
Hello everyone,
We have set the trip date for Friday/ Sat, Nov 18 and 19, 2005. That’s the week before Thanksgiving, which I hope will be before cooking/traveling begins. Sometimes Jan is beautiful, but sometimes it’s icy. Too risky to chance it would be fine for an early morning departure. Bus charter prices have risen nearly $300 since last year. No surprise, but realize we must pass this along to each person. As is, we still try to do little more than break even.
THE BIG SHOW... a new Winslow Homer exhibition at the National Gallery. I still have much to see at the American Indian Museum . Let me have a reply if you would like to have info emailed or posted to you when we have a sheet ready to go.
Thanks, Vera Dickerson

BENCHES '05

Town Publicity
|

The benches sold between $50 - $1000, mostly in the one to three hundred dollar range. It was not that well attended but I noticed a few BRAA members! The bench we painted in my class at Dayspring, dedicated to Houston Couch, sold to a Blacksburg town council member. Two or three benches were dedicated to Nadine Allen. All the benches were beautiful. - S. Bratsch |
Designed and executed by BRAA Members and their students (Click thumbnails to enlarge)

Three benches are on display in the library.

"Houston's Couch" … was inspired by the founder of Dayspring Christian Academy, Houston Couch…, well known at Virginia Tech as a turf grass professor.
We chose a jungle landscape full of all types of animals and flowers to represent creation.
Susie Bratsch & Students, Dayspring Christian Academy
|
"Spring Returns"
I first saw this bench, bare and grey as a winter landscape; stripped of its paint and color.
So, just as the natural flowers are reborn in spring, I wanted to give this bench a rebirth of new color and warmth; a renewal of spirit and joy.
Maxine Lyons
|
"Butterflies" were my inspiration and subject. What is a garden without butterflies to remind us of both the beauty and fragility of Creation? Butterflies also embody notions of life renewed, marvellous possibilities, and freedom. The freedom of the butterfly helps my friends and me remember a dear friend who has been "set free."
Derek Myers

Two others are located in the Recreation center:
|
"Cherry Blossoms" One of the first sure signs of spring is the blooming of the cherry trees with their limbs full of large flowering clusters; white tinged with pink. I wanted to give this bench the feeling of spring so I covered it with large cherry blossom sprays.

Many of us first took painting classes from Nadine through the YMCA Open University. After several years, asked the Rev. Kelly Sission if we could paint on Tuesday Nights at Glade Church.… We hope that butterflies that Nadine loved so much will keep her memory alive.

Two More are in the Parks and Recreation Main Office

|
A turquoise base was chosen to (Hopefully) look like the gem. I envisioned a place to stop and rest. To catch your breath after a day of gradening and possiblly enjoy a cup of tea.
Last year Nadine encouraged Larry and me to get involved in the project. As it turned out it was great fun. This year, after Nadine's illness and sadly her death, we decided to dedicate the bench to her. She was such a positive influence. We will miss her.

I wanted a different kind of bench for the garden. I love the VT Botanical gardens, in particular, the lily pond. A bench and the gardens are very relaxing, so I combined the two.
This fun project was an individual effort. Everything was removed to base wood and metal. It was then primed, the scene was painted and it was coated.
