Memo to all BRAA members:

This is our third year teaming with the YMCA to help raise funds at their Food and Wine Auction-Benefit. We are supportive of this event because our paintings add class to this event as they help generate funds for the YMCA. It was also established that the artist would receive a 50-50 split for each painting sold. If a painting doesn’t sell, it will be returned.

Our art should also follow the food and wine theme. Aside from the obvious, my imagination takes me to settings where food and drink might be prepared or consumed. Colors of food and drink, empty plates, glasses and bottles also come to mind, which then reminds me of exquisite drawings of bottles by Morandi. Consider having some fun in the cubist style of Braque and Picasso depicting some of these items in a still-life painting. When you slice a piece of fruit or watermelon, doesn’t a painting come to mind? Do you already have something on hand that falls into this category?

The benefit of participating with one or more of your paintings includes a complimentary ticket for a very fun evening on Friday, June 1. Although our paintings are an important part of this event, many other wonderful items are being donated and will be part of the silent auction. Dozens of people in our community and beyond give of their time, cooking talents and gifts of goods to make the evening a success.

We only need 6-9 paintings, so the first to contact me are the first in. Please call Carole Davis at 951-1700 or " ccarrerad@aol.com. I’m happy to answer questions before you commit.

Thanks for helping me help them.
Carole

12 pots and a Bench!

Claudia Hurt,
Sally Mook,
Maxine Lyons,
Bebe Onasaga, Kendall Kessler, &
Toni Bowman

Thanks to the BRAA artists who painted flower pots for auction at the Blacksburg Flower & Garden Festival that was scheduled for this past April. You did a great job and the pots are absolutely beautiful! Due to the tragedy at VT on April 16th, the Festival/Auction was canceled, so at present, the pots are still located at the Blacksburg Parks & Recreation Department office on Patrick Henry Drive awaiting an event where they could be auctioned or sold. It is unclear at this time, if the Festival will be held next year, but when I have more information on that, I make if available to the BRAA membership.

I hope you have a wonderful summer, Maxine Lyons

Hi All,
Blacksburg Parks & Rec has 12 flower pots & one park bench for us to paint this year. Please contact me as soon as possible if you would like to paint one so that I can have your name put on it for pick up. The bench will go to the first person to contact me about it.

The date to have them completed and delivered back is April 1st, so we have more time this year.

Thanks, Maxine Lyons

DOUBLE - $165,
SINGLE - $190,
TRIPLE - $150

Our annual get away to Washington, D.C. was the first weekend of December, Friday and Saturday, 1st and 2nd. We went by Sunshine Tours bus with a pickup in Blacksburg and Hollins exits, then on to D.C.

Friday afternoon included a trip to the Torpedo Factory galleries and studios and lunch in Old Town Alexandria. We finished the day in Georgetown with a choice of various ethnic menus and lots of galleries and shops, including my favorite: Paper Source.

Saturday was a day to spend on the Mall in the National Gallery of Art, the newly reopened Smithsonian Museum of American Art and Portrait Gallery or one of the many other choices. There were enough stimulating things to see and do to give all a good "cultural fix.'' We boarded the bus at 4:00 p.m. for the return trip home, with a short dinner stop enroute.

Y Fair 2006, November 10-12.

I want to thank all of you for your gracious and friendly “manning” of the booth at the Y Fair. Everyone was on time or before time. Many stayed later than scheduled while Madeline and Frieda were even able to draft Bob and Dan to assist in setup and tear down respectively. Thanks guys! The old saying that herding Artists is like herding cats is ABSOLUTELY NOT TRUE. It was an exceptional experience working with you!

I would like to especially thank Frieda Post for her tireless efforts, knowledge, and work as Co-Chair of this event. Let’s hear it for Frieda!

As part of the wrap-up I would like to solicit your thoughts on 1.) What went right, 2.) What went wrong, and 3.) What suggestions you have for change. Once I receive your brainstorming ideas in the three categories, I will summarize them, document our expenses, income, and new contact information, and make a recommendation for next year’s participation.

I will tell you that I have decided that the two price cards were a waste of your time and your paper. This will be eliminated next year and the receipts will carry the pertinent information. Only one price card and it will go with the art to the buyer. Other suggestions for simplifications are welcome.

Thanks again, Larry Mitchell
