Speaker: Dr. Larry D. Mitchell, Professor Emeritus of Mechanical Engineering, and Warm Glass Sculptor.

Larry taught Mechanical Engineering Design for thirty years at Tech.  He is famous for collecting hobbies in his three years of retirement. His most interesting hobby is Warm Glass or Fused Glass. He was trained in fused glass jewelry at the Fine Arts Center of the New River Valley in Pulaski, VA by Edna Love. He followed this by Basic but Broad Scoped Fused Glass training at Snow Farm in Williamsburg, MA; which included production of a 4” x 8” glass-block fusion in 18 layers (right, below.) His most recent training was an Advanced Warm Glass class at J. C. Campbell Folk School in Brasstown, NC, which involved collage glass panels and slumping of Vases.

Larry tends toward abstract and Techno-oriented designs.. These photos (click to enlarge) show his progression from jewelry to panel art to slumping and fused blocks.
