Title: The History of the Horse in Art and Anatomical Drawings
As a beast of burden, a major means of transportation, a critical element in ancient warfare, and an exciting associate in sports, the horse has has held an intimate relationship with humans for many centuries. These, as well as their inherent beauty, have made the horse a longtime subject in art. This presentation will review our long and colorful mutual history. |
Dr. Carl Pfeiffer is a professor emeritus in the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine's Department of Biomedical Sciences and Pathobiology.

Carl has painted in oils since 1964. His subjects reflect his avid interest in nature, biology and the outdoors.

Title: Still Life Painting
Presentor: David Tanner (VMFA )
Location: Glade Church, Education Rm.
The lecture will describe the significance of traditional and contemporary elements in oil paintings, while further outlining the techniques and skills utilized in oil painting. There will also be a slide presentation of commissioned and private oils by David Tanner accompanying the lecture.

David Tanner is an accomplished oil painter and art instructor whose work reflects a Neoclassical approach to a style best described as Contemporary Realism. David teaches classes at the Hand Workshop, For Art’s Sake studio, St. Catherine’s School, and the studio school at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts.

Working from a still-life arrangement in the classroom, you’ll develop your observational skills to create realistic oil paintings. Line, form, value, texture, space and color are emphasized, building confidence with technique and execution.

 Title: Gustave Caillebotte, French Impressionist painter
Presentor: Jeffrey Allison (VMFA)
Location: Blacksburg Library
Who was Gustave Caillebotte? While posters of his most famous painting, Rue de Paris; Temps de pluie (Paris street; Rainy weather) have been sold in museum gift shops for generations, few realize the pivotal role he played in the very existence of the Impressionist movement. Explore Caillebotte as a participant, diplomat, and benefactor of Impressionism as well as the unique realism found in his prolific body of work. This program has been organized by the Office of Statewide Partnerships of the VMFA, Richmond, and is supported by the Paul Mellon Endowment.

The "Annual
Business Meeting" Program is held each April to elect officers
and conduct necessary business.
Programs are scheduled
in the summer for the following year. Program suggestions should be
sent to the Program Chair, P.O. Box 525, Blacksburg, Virginia 24060.
