Juror's Statement
Phyllis Rosenzweig

This exhibition was selected from large number of slides that represented an interesting mix of work from around the region. It is difficult to judge work from slides. However, I tried, as much a possible, to honor the variety of approaches they seemed to represent.

The qualities I respond to in works of art are: “creativity,” “imagination,” a point of view, and an intellectual and conceptual underpinning as well as skill and sensitivity in the handling of material — regardless of media or style. This list is probably banal and the criteria ineffable and certainly subject to my own personal taste and judgment.

Nonetheless, I hope this show will be satisfying to the artists included, and as interesting to many viewers as the selection process was for me.

Associate Curator
Hirshhorn Museum & Sculpture Garden

Phyllis selected 38 works from 218 slides entered for the exhibition. Her participation was supported in part by the 1995 "Community Choice" program of theVirginia Museum for the Arts Richmond, Virginia, of which the BRAA and FACNRV are community partners.)
