VIRGINIA MUSEUM OF FINE ARTS LECTURE COMING TO The New River Valley.

Vicki Fama, Instructor of Art History at James Madison University will present a Virginia Museum of Fine Arts lecture entitled, “Women In and Out of the Kitchen” on March 21, 2010 in Blacksburg

Sponsored locally by BRAA, the lecture will be at Blacksburg Library at 3:00 PM.

This lecture explores the contradicting roles of women in the art world during the 19th century. While painting and sculpture often operated within a coded framework of ideal femininity, female artists and patrons also lived and worked in a complex relationship to such a code, with varying motives and outcomes. The lecture examines works by both male and female artists, and explores the many ways femininity was defined, reinforced, and tested in late 19th century art and culture.

Vicki Fama holds a B.A. in American History from the University of California at Santa Barbara and an M.A. in Italian Renaissance Art from the University of Virginia. This program has been organized by the VMFA Office of Education & Statewide Partnerships and is funded in part, by the Jean Stafford Camp Memorial Fund.
