History |

- 1949: In the fall, a group
of artists on the V.P.I. staff began talking about forming
a small art group for the critical discussion of their own
work. On January 13, 1950, a community art club was formed
for those "interested in increasing the opportunities
for enjoyment of the arts in Blacksburg." Among the founders were Dean Carter
, Lucy Lee Lancaster , and John Laurent .
- 1950: The association's first exhibit was a showing of the paintings
of Horace Day
in February, 1950. Its first show after formal
organization was a two-person exhibition held May 7 and 8,
1950, of sculpture by Dean Carter and paintings by John Laurent.
An exhibit of VPI student art work was shown May 27-28, the
same year.
- 1952: 'Regional' was added to our name in "1952 when the decision was made to become a chapter of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. By that time the membership had grown and now individuals from nearby towns and counties had joined and were attending meetings." (From Lucy Lee Lancaster's 1970 history - bottom-right)
1953: The VMFA Artmobile program was founded. The Association underwrote and staffed numerous yearly visits to Blacksburg through the program's close in 1994.
- 1955: The
first annual Blacksburg Art Festival was held including an
exhibition, a Dutch art auction, concerts, art movies, a Punch
and Judy show, lectures and demonstrations.

Those who cannot learn from history are doomed to repeat it.George Santayana
Dear members,
I stumbled them this May by way of a google search. There are 30 plus folders (about 2 feet high) about the early BRAA in the Lucy Lee Lancaster Special Collection of VA Tech's Newman Library.
I have begun photographng, ranking, and converting documents to machine readable, interactive pdf files and images. |
The first document I've completed is a twenty year history (1970) of the association likely penned by Miss Lancaster herself: |
|
Some of the other documents are delightful,
like this hand made picnic invitation.

It's like digging for treasure. There are many files in the collection, which I am now photographing. I've pictured bits of the source documents in the 20th anniversary history above.)
The Lancaster Collection has been carefully stored and preserved but needs work - the files seem not much disturbed since they were donated to the library. I was surprised to see that early documents were not dated, so I have made a reverse calendar to determine the years.
John Jackson, of university libraries, has located another folio of information from multiple donors an another collection, as well. And, there's more!
As there tends to be a major turnover of BRAA members every five years or so, these little pieces of information can go a long way to give newcomers a sense of history. I had no idea Lucy Lancaster was an early BRAA Vice President (She held manyother offices.) Except for Dean Carter and Joni Pienkowski, who remain active members, I doubt anyone has a full perspective...
